WELCOME TO ARTA

Arta is an unspoilt gem in the crown on Mallorca, a prosperous town located near the north-east coast of Mallorca. Arta is a traditional town that nestles in the middle of a large valley at the foot of a small mountain. This beautiful typical old Mallorcan town clings to its heritage and only a nod is given to tourism which is perhaps part of its attraction for visitors who prefer to absorb the true culture of an area. It comes to life on a Tuesday which is market day.

The biggest attraction to Arta is the fortified  Santuari de Sant Salvador which was constructed in the 14th century, and later rebuilt in the 19th century. The artwork within the church is breath taking and the courtyard within the sanctuary provides the perfect place for quiet contemplation whilst admiring the stunning views. The stroll up to the this historical attraction is very pleasant but quite a feat with 180 steps up a tree lines walkway!

It also has a small museum which can be found inside Sa Nostra bank. Archaeological discoveries from Greek and Roman periods and a collection of stuffed and preserved local birds are housed in the museum.

One amazing fact that is little known about Arta is that it was one of the last places in Europe to suffer an outbreak of the bubonic plague. Colonia de Sant Pere a nearby beautiful fishing village was established by survivors who moved out of Arta to avoid infection.

Arta is a nice town to leisurely stroll around with winding alleys and artisan shops to peruse. There are a few nice hotels within the town itself, while in the surrounding area some nice small finca hotels are there for the discovery that are ideal for enjoying the peace and quiet of this area. Arta boasts a small but good selection of restaurants that serve traditional Mallorcan cuisine.
